For details see here: Commission launches new strategy to make Europe a global leader in life sciences by 2030

The European Commission has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at positioning Europe as the global leader in life sciences by 2030. Life sciences, which encompass the study of living systems, are vital to health, environmental sustainability, and economic growth, contributing €1.5 trillion to the EU economy and supporting 29 million jobs. Backed by over €10 billion annually, the strategy outlines a coordinated approach to accelerate innovation, improve market access, and foster public trust in emerging technologies. Key initiatives include enhancing research infrastructure, promoting cross-sectoral technologies, and investing in microbiome-based solutions and biomanufacturing.

To facilitate rapid adoption of life science innovations, the Commission plans to introduce an EU Biotech Act and launch a matchmaking platform for startups, industry, and investors. Additionally, €300 million will be allocated to support procurement in areas like climate adaptation and cancer solutions. A Life Science Coordination Group will be established to align policies and engage stakeholders. This strategy responds to Europe’s declining competitiveness in translating research into practical applications, addressing fragmented ecosystems and underutilized data. It builds on public consultation and research, including studies highlighting the sector’s economic impact and Europe’s global standing in life sciences patents.
