NESO to review projects for connection request based on readiness vs first-come / first-served
Deadline: 8th July – 29th July 2025
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has launched a three-week evidence window, from 8 to 29 July, to overhaul the UK’s 738GW grid connection queue by requiring over 5,000 projects to prove their construction readiness and strategic value. This marks the first step in replacing the outdated first-come, first-served system, which has allowed speculative projects to delay viable clean energy developments. Projects will be assessed and sorted into two streams: those deemed shovel-ready and aligned with the UK’s Clean Power 2030 goals will receive confirmed connection offers, while others will be deferred or removed. This reform, part of the government’s broader Plan for Change, aims to unlock up to £40 billion annually in private investment and accelerate the deployment of renewables. NESO plans to publish successful projects in September and begin issuing revised offers in the autumn, with the goal of securing updated contracts for all necessary projects by early 2026.
