Scotland Europa Net Zero Insights: Nature And Natural Resources

On August 31, Scotland Europa hosted our latest Net Zero Insights session, focusing on nature and natural resources.

On July 5, 2023, the European Commission adopted a package of measures on the sustainable use of key natural resources, which equally aims strengthen the resilience of EU food systems and farming. This package comes under the umbrella of the European Green Deal and aims to support the achievement of the EU’s wider net zero goals. These proposals have been released as a package due to their significantly interlinked nature. There have also been some significant developments around the contentious Nature Restoration Law, which is linked to the sustainable use of natural resources package. The Scotland Europa team has written a briefing on this package which you can find on the members-only area of the website here.

The EU wants to set the standard of legislation in areas like soil health, forestry, agri-food systems, and the circular economy, and so is proposing legislation that it wants partners across the world to have to adhere to the standard of. We expect that not only will the EU’s ambitions in these areas impact on wider global ambition and legislation, but that it will also have an impact on the standard of product expected of imports into the EU in the future.

The session will focus on these new developments and offer some analysis on their impact for Scottish stakeholders.
