Red Brick Creative

71 Brewing’s Red Brick Creative facility will continue the development of the former Blackness Iron Works in Dundee with improved visitor facilities for the brewery but also to deliver attractive workshop and studio spaces for Dundee’s flourishing creative sector.

The existing brewery process at ground floor of this site uses cooling plant to capture the waste heat from  the production process and reject it to atmosphere.  This will change with the next phase of development, with the waste heat instead being stored and utilised for space heating and water heating within the Red Brick Creative floors.

The fabric of the building will be improved under the architectural specification and the methods for heating and cooling within the new fit-out areas will be driven by low-carbon technology including heat pumps and waste heat recovery. Onsite electricity generation, new EV charging stations and the evolution of a decarbonised electricity grid will complement these measures to drive the development towards a zero-carbon energy balance.

The project ambition is for all waste heat to be captured and utilised within the heating system for the upper floors development and fit-out. A waste heat profiling exercise shall be conducted and overlaid with the RBC heat demand profile to inform the sizing and duty of the new heat pumps. The anticipated costs and return on investment resulting from the new heating plant shall be researched and presented.
